ASME SA516:2021 pdf download SPECIFICATION FOR PRESSURE VESSEL PLATES, CARBON STEEL, FOR MODERATE- AND LOWER-TEMPERATURE SERVICE
1. Scope
1.1 This specification covers carbon steel plates intendedprimarily for service in welded pressure vessels where im-proved notch toughness is important.
1.2 Plates under this specification are available in fourgrades having different strength levels as follows:
Grade U.s.[S]
Tensile Strength,
ksi[MPa]
55[380]
55-75[380_515]
60[415]
6o-80[415-550]
65[450]
65-85[450-585]
7o[485]
70-90 [485-620]
1.3 The maximum thickness of plates is limited only by thecapacity of the composition to meet the specified mechanicalproperty requirements.
1.4 For plates produced from coil and furnished withoutheat treatment or with stress relieving only, the additionalrequirements, including additional testing requirements and thereporting of additional test results of Specification A20/A20Mapply.
1.5The values stated in either inch-pound units or Sl unitsare to be regarded separately as standard. Within the text, thesI units are shown in brackets. The values stated in eachsystem are not exact equivalents; therefore, each system mustbe used independently of the other. Combining values from thetwo systems may result in nonconformance with the specifi-cation.
1.6 Thxis international standard was developed in accor-dance with internationally recognized principles on standard-ization established in the Decision on Principles for theDevelopment of lnternational Standards,Guides and Recom-mendaiions issied by the World Trade Organization TechnicalBarriers to Trade (TBT) Conmmittee.
2. Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:
A20/A 2OM Specification for General Requirements for SteelPlates for Pressure Vessels
A435/A435M Specification for Straight-Beam UltrasonicExamination of Steel Plates
A577/A577M Specification for Ultrasonic Angle-Beam Ex-amination of Steel Plates
A578/A578M Specification for Straight-Beam UltrasonicExamination of Rolled Steel Plates for Special Applica-tions
3.General Requirements and Ordering Information3.1 Material supplied to this product specification shallconform to Specification A20/A20M,which outlines the test-ing and retesting methods and procedures, permissible varia-tions in dimensions and mass, quality and repair of defects, marking, loading, and ordering information.
3.2 Inaddition to the basic requirements of thisspecification, certain supplementary requirements are availablewhere additional control, testing, or examination is required tomeet end use requirements. The purchaser is referred to thelisted supplementary requirements in this specification and tothe detailed requirements in Specification A20/A20M.
3.3 If the requirements of this specification are in conflictwith the requirements of Specification A20/A20M, the require-ments of this specification shall prevail.
3.4 Coils are excluded from qualification to this specifica-tion until they are processed into finished plates. Platesproduced from coil means plates that have been cut toindividual lengths from coil. The processor directly controls, oris responsible for, the operations involved in the processing ofcoils into finished plates. Such operations include decoiling, leveling, cutting to length, testing, inspection, conditioning, heat treatment (if applicable), packaging, marking, loading forshipment, and certification.
NoTE 1—For plates produced from coil and furnished without heattreatment or with stress relieving only, three test results are reported foreach qualifying coil. Additional requirements regarding plate producedfrom coil are described in Specification A20/A20M.
3.5 If the requirements of this specification are in conflictwith the requirements of Specification A20/A20M, the require-ments of this specification shall prevail.
4.Materials and Manufacture
4.1 Steelmaking Practice—The steel shall be killed andshall conform to the fine austenitic grain size requirement ofSpecification A20/A20M.
5. Heat Treatment
5.1 Plates 1.50 in. [40 mm] and under in thickness arenormally supplied in the as-rolled condition. The plates may beordered normalized or stress relieved, or both.
5.2 Plates over 1.50 in. [40 mm] in thickness shall benormalized.
5.3 When notch-toughness tests are required on plates1 1/ in. [40 mm] and under in thickness, the plates shall benormalized unless otherwise specified by the purchaser.
5.4 If approved by the purchaser, cooling rates faster thanthose obtained by cooling in air are permissible for improve-ment of the toughness, provided the plates are subsequentlytempered in the temperature range 1100 to 1300°F[595 to705°℃].
6. Chemical Composition
6.1 The steel shall conform to the chemical requirementsgiven in Table 1 unless otherwise modified in accordance withSupplementary Requirement S17,Vacuum Carbon-DeoxidizedSteel, in Specification A20/A20M.
7.Mechanical Properties
7.1 Tension Test—The plates, as represented by the tensiontest specimens, shall conform to the requirements given inTable 2.
