ISo 4196.Graphical Symbols – Use of ArTows.
TERM AND DEFINITION
For the purposes of this Standard. the following termand definition apply.
3.7
symhol: visually perceptible figure used to transmitinformation independently of language.
NOTE: t may be produced by drawing.printing, or other means.
4 GENERAL
4.1
symbols shall be as shown in succeeding clauses ofthis Standard. However. symbols that are shown inoutline form may. in actual use. be filled for enhancedclarity of reproduction and improved visual perception by the operator , excepl as otherwisc noted for individualsymbols.
4.2
Limitations inherent in some reproduction and dispiaytechnologies may require increased line thickness orother minor modifications of symbols.Such nodifica-tions are acceptabie. providied the synbol remains un-changed in its basicgraphicai elenents andi easilydiscernible by the operator.
4.3
Additionally. to improve the appearance and percepti-bility of a graphical symbol,or to coordinale with thedesign of the equipment to which the symbol is applied.it may be necessary to change the line thickness orround the corners of a synboi. The grapiic designeris normaily fiee to make suci chianges, provided thatthe cssential pcrccptual characteristics of the symbolare maintained. See ISO 3461-1: 1988,subclause 10.2.
4.4
For actuai use. alii symbois shaii be reproduced largeenough to be easily discernible by the operaior. SeeIso 3461-1 for guidelines on the proper sizing ofsymbois.Synbois shaii be usedi in ihe orientation shownin this Standard unless oter wise uoled for individualsymbols.
4.5
Most symbols are constructed using a building blockapproach in which various symbols and symbol elementsare combinedi in a logical manner to produce newsymbols.
4.6
lf a symbol shows a machine or parts of a machinefrom a side view. a machine moving fron right to leftacross the symbol grid area shall be assumed. If asymbol shows a nachine or parts of a machine from an overhead view,a machine moving from bottom totop across the symbol grid area shall be assumed.
4.7
Sybols on controls and displays shall have a goodcontrast to their background. A light symbol on a darkbackground is prefened forHosi controis. Dispiaysmay usc either a light symbol on a dark backgroundor a dark symbol on a light background, dependingupon which altcrnative provides the best visuai percep-tion. When a symbol imagc if reversed (for examplc, from black-on-white to whitc-on-black and vice versa),it shall be done for the entire symbol.
4.8
Synbois shaii be iocated on or adjacent to the controlor display that is being identified. Where more thanone sybol is required for a control, the symbols shallbe located in relation to the controi such that movementof thc control toward the symbol shall affect the functiondepicted by that symbol.
4.9
Arrows used in symbols shall conform to the require-ments of ISO 4196. 1SO 346l-l shall he. consultedfor the general principles of creating symbols.
4.10
ISO/IEC registration numbers arc shown for symbolsin this Standard. Registration numbers bclow 5000refer to ISo 7000. Registration numbers abovc 5o00refer to lEC 417.
